Fundamentals
Stance (Orthodox & Southpaw)
Your stance is the athletic base you punch, move, and defend from. Orthodox fighters lead with the left; southpaws lead with the right. A good stance keeps you balanced, mobile, and ready to attack or defend at any moment.
How to do it
- 1Feet roughly shoulder-width, lead foot forward, rear foot at ~45 degrees.
- 2Weight balanced on the balls of both feet.
- 3Hands up, elbows in, chin down.
- 4Knees slightly bent, relaxed and springy.
Common mistakes
- Feet too narrow (no balance) or too wide (no mobility).
- Standing flat-footed.
- Squaring up to the opponent.
